Ryan is SICK of school!!

Well, just when I thought it was safe to work and play without having to worry about my loving children...(Tuesday, first day of school) I get a call from the school nurse at work around 12:15. Ryan has a sore throat. They had encouraged him to wait through lunch, but he still feels sick.

I spoke with him, and although I suspected he was faking, I picked him up and had him tested for Strep, since I just went off the antibiotic for it. Well, the rapid test came back negative. I brought him home and observed him. I forced him (I'm talking with full threats and temper tantrums) to read a chapter in his book and go through his math triangles. He is a good actor, but he also has too much energy to continue "acting" sick for too long. He did not suddenly break into energy and joy as the night went on, in fact he was acting sicker. So I became certain that he really was sick.

I called this morning and the doctor's office confirmed that the over night culture came back positive for strep. So our Ryan boy missed the last day of school due to chicken pox and he is missing 2 1/2 days of the first week of school due to strep.

ARRRRRRGGGGGGG!! Now...is that a soar throat I'm feeling...or am I imagining it???

DOUBLE ARRRRRRRRGGGGG!!!!

How is life going with yous guys???

  • Speaking from past experience, you might consider testing the family(we even tested our cat)for strep, since it keeps recurring. Unbeknownst to us, Lindsay was a carrier, and as soon as we were off the antibiotics, Jesse and I would get socked again. It is just an idea, but you guys have also had your share of strep. Hope Ryan feels better soon, and I hope none of you get it now! We are off to a pretty good start so far. Last Night was my parents night at school and I met some very lovely people who just seem like they are the same age as the above mentioned strep carrier! They are so young!!!!!!!!! I know, Betsy, it's just that I am SO OLD! But looks like a good year so far. Bye for now.

  • Wow, that is quite a good catch on your part, Betsy. Good thing you took him in. Joannie's suggestion is a good one, if you can get the whole family tested it might really put this sickness to rest. How do you test a cat for strep? It creates a great visual in my mind of many people trying to hold down one cat and trying to get its mouth open to get a swab down its throat. Not my idea of fun. I hope Ryan is better soon and back to school soon!

  • Now that you mention it, we did not test the cat, but treated her with antibiotics as well as the rest of the family. Also, new toothbrushes and disinfecting the bathrooms and kitchen, and washing all sheets in hot water. What a drag, but it beats neverending sickness! Good luck, Bets!

  • The strange thing is that the strep is not really happening right away. It's like every couple of months. I do not have a sore throat. Maybe I should find a doctor who can remember what the incubation period is for strep. It also is frustrating with me seeing one doctor and the kids seeing a pediatrician. It's hard to get them to work together...or at least it requires a lot of effort and co-pays. We just bought new toothbrushes. I did just clean the bathroom and kitchen. I need to go disinfect all the door handles and how about this keyboard...I'm on it!!! Oh wait, it's new too...a Halverson hand me down. (working great by the way)

  • HI ALL,
SO sorry to hear about all of this sickness. As to the toothbrushes, I purchased a Violight toothbrush cleaner, (disinfects with a magic light) for about $49.00. It's the greatest. Really easy to use and not too bulky on the sink. It works with any toothbrushes and will hold 4. We've had it for over a year now. No problems.

Strep can be such a serious disease that I'm glad you are pursuing the possibility of "family carriers". How about a "family practice" doctor? That's what we've had since Eau Claire, when the best pediatrician in the world didn't know that Carolyn was on her 6th bout of ear infections, (she wasn't even 1) ! Not a perfect solution, but in this case it might help coordinate the info a little bit better. I'll bet your clinic has them too. Maybe not. . . .

I'm swamped with work. Many issues this year. . . . House in chaos etc.

How were the first days of school for everyone else?

    Miss you all,
    Love Deebs
